about

We begin this set with The Old Maids of Galway reel which is tune #1417 in Francis O’Neill’s aforementioned Music of Ireland. Cork born flute player Francis O’Neill (1848-1936) along with a son of Belfast, fiddle player James O’Neill (1862-1949) who transcribed all 1850 pieces of music in the book and also contributed over 400 tunes himself along with the many Irish musicians in Chicago at that time who also made tune contributions to create this “bible” of irish music.

Mick Moloney follows with The Reel of Rio, a tune written by Tipperary fiddler and composer Sean Ryan (1919-1985). Seamus Egan plays Coyne’s Reel, a tune he picked up during a visit to Miltown Malbay in County Clare. The same town features in the title of the next tune played by Eileen Ivers, Return to Miltown,a tune often attributed to Donegal fiddler John Doherty (1900-1980) under the title The Glorious Return to Miltown. Jimmy Keane plays Hunting the Boyne another of his compositions followed by the group performing a reprise of The Old Maids of Galway
