about

We open with a selection of tunes all firmly rooted in the Irish American musical tradition, interspersed with verses from a classic immigration song.

The Kerry Jig was composed by the late Bronx, New York born accordion player Charlie Mulvihill (1917-1975) and recorded on a 1971 album named “Sweet and Traditional Music of Ireland” featuring Charlie along with Longford born and Brooklyn based fiddler Paddy Reynolds (1920-2005), Irish American piano player Felix Dolan (1937-2013) of New York, and a Green Fields of America (GFOA) alumnus, Dublin/New York button box player James Keane.

Seamus Cooley’s Jig was learned by Jimmy Keane whilst he was growing up and learning the music in Chicago from flute player Seamus Cooley (1929-1997) who was from Peterswell in Galway and also brother of box player Joe Cooley (1924-1973) -- both neighbors of Jimmy in Chicago.

Mick first heard Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore from his former bandmate Paul Brady in the 1960s who in turn learned it from the great Derry singer Eddie Butcher (1900-1980).

Sligo Jack was written by Jimmy Keane for the much loved John “Sligo Jack” Finan (1951-1986), a friend, barman, and musical colleague of Jimmy’s living in Chicago from Sligo.

The Culfadda Reel was composed by Dublin born NewYork fiddle and banjo player Larry Redican (1908-1975)

lyrics

Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

From Derry Quay we sailed away
On the 23rd of May
We were boarded by a pleasant crew
Bound for Americay

Fresh water there we did take on
Five thousand gallons or more
In case we'd run short going to NewYork
Far away from the Shamrock shore

We safely reached the other side
In three and twenty days
We were taken as passengers by a man
And sent 'round in six different ways

We each of us drank a parting glass
In case we should never meet more
And we drank a health to old Ireland
And Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

So fare thee well, sweet Lisa dear
And likewise to Derry town
And twice farewell to my comrades bold
Who still dwell on that sainted ground

If fortune, it ever should favor me
Or I do should have money in store
I'll go back and I'll wed the wee lassie I left
On Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore
